Greetings from the center of the Earth!

It has been yet another amazing week down here in Concoto.

It all began with the result of last week´s trip to Molinuco, I have over 30 bug bites that are about the size of 50 cent coins. They are still HUGE and kind of like a huge rash all over now, not quite sure what bugs live here but they are nasty.

The beginning of the week was just the usual. Teaching our investigators and contacting like crazy. The pouring rain every afternoon and eating tons of rice. We have been teaching the same family Tamayo. We also found a couple new investigators while contacting in the central part of town. One woman owns a haircut place and is obsessed with my blonde hair, and also another family that has 3 little kids. We will begin teaching the family once they move in a week or two!

On Friday we had divisions for 24 hours. We got on the wrong bus to meet the other sisters and ended up like a hour away to begin our adventure. I went about an hour away to Hermana Mollo´s area and her companion went back to Conocoto with my companion. Hermana Mollo has 16 months on the mission; she is from Bolivia and is 21. She was super nice to me and we worked crazy hard for a day and taught about 9 lessons in 10 hours it was amazing. There was a huge storm we laughed and somehow I was able to communicate with her for 24 hours she knows not a lick of English. Except for “dang it”!  She wanted me to teach her ballet and some little girl we taught took a picture with me because she thought I was Barbie. She taught me soo much and I enjoyed seeing a completely different part of Ecuador. We were up closer to a volcano. I loved spending time with her learning how to be a better missionary.
Next this week I ate cow stomach twice, it was NASTY and people eat it like crazy here, chewy, nasty stuff, I almost died. Also when I was with Hermana Mollo, I ate an entire fish, also horrible. I thought I was going to die.
The next thing I need to talk about is a new thing to me. People here are obsessed with their blenders. Yes, the kind in the states you make smoothies with. They sell them in almost every store. Here people just blend fruit for juice. EVERY meal we have some fresh juice straight out of the blender. Which brings me to my next point, the grandma that lives above us decides she is going to blend her juice at 5 am every morning, yes 5 in the stinking morning!!!!!!!!!!!! We live in a building thing where and everyone is a big family but us, they think we are crazy. Also, people make blender covers they sew them and give them as gifts. Blenders for life!!! You will think of Ecuador next time you get out your blender.
The general Women’s conference for the church was on Saturday night, I LOVED IT!! I could not help but think of everyone back home watching it and a cried like a baby hearing music in English. I did not understand much of it in Spanish, but the spirit still worked through me, it was so special.
I hope all is well back in California; I miss you all so much and love you each. Thank you for your support on my mission, this is the best work in the world, seeing people’s lives change and seeing good people become even better in the most humble ways. I love every hard and good moment. I pray for you all and think of you each day, Love you all so much

Molinuco

It has been such a great week. We have taught a ton and worked our butts
off. Our health has been much better, thank goodness! The rain has come, it
rains every afternoon, buckets and buckets.
Our investigators are doing well we found a new investigator on the street
Gaston, he is a teacher and wants us to teach him in English, very strange
he looked like he did not know a lick of English. He came to church Sunday
and we are all set up to teach him this week!!
Our next investigator is the familia Taymayo they are a family of 5 they
have 3 kids one 9 year old daughter, a 2 year old and a 1 year old. The
parents and the 9 year old have a baptism date we are super stoked about.
They are soo sweet the dad even thanked me for my testimony the other
night. I feel at home when I am there the kids are a little crazy and they
are so kind.
We work every day with the less active members; they are a huge focus and
LOVE having us over. One girl came to church on Sunday and hadn’t been in 7
years.
Today our zone went to the waterfall Molinuco. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!! We drove
a good hour or so to get up to the mountain. A huge family owns the trail
area, VERY native Ecuadorians. It felt like I was in a move about the
tribes down here it was CRAZY! The hike to the waterfall took most of the
day, very wet and raining while we were hiking. I was amazed; it put most
of the hikes I have been on to shame.  Ecuador is amazing, it was breath
taking!
Some other things we made chocolate chip cookies this
week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HEAVEN, the ovens are so strange here but somehow
we found one to use last night at our ward mission leaders house, we made a
ton for our zone. Every time you eat rice just think of me eating a mountain
of rice every day, literally a mountain. The food here is very bland, not
much flavor.
One thing I wanted to share you as I was reading in Alma 32 this week, is
planting a seed of faith, a good see and true seed.
I miss you.
I love you all, and thank you for the support you give me.
Para Siempre Dios Este Con Vos

Record breaking!

Well the title says it.
So to just take you through time last week Monday night, Tuesday, and Wednesday were great days. We worked worked, worked, taught some families, ate well, had ice cream, smiled, studied on our roof and enjoyed missionary life. Then Wednesday night rolled around, we ate a late dinner at these two sisters house and at the time I could have told you it was the best food I had in Ecuador. We got home that night, went to bed and I woke up to Hma. Castillo barfing at 12:30am. She threw up 14 times in 12 hours. On Thursday evening I started and we were both beyond sick. I honestly thought I was going to die. We both have never puked so much in our lives. Along with the Zone leaders on the phone with us barfing at their house cause they ate the same thing. We went to the clinic to be tested for parasites, and it just came back that we had stomach infections. We both drank Gatorade for 3 days straight. I will never drink it again haha! So we took some crazy Ecuadorian pills, no clue what they had in them and somehow I am emailing right now. IT WAS HORRIABLE, this brings me to the point that the only picture I took this week is Hma Castillo and I lying in bed in between barfing.
Well that was that, it has been one barf week. There is a 1st for everything.

On more of a spiritual note, our ward here in Conocoto is preparing to go on their yearly trip to the temple. They all take a bus to Guayaquil which is very expensive and a HUGE deal. It has been so humbling to see the people save and save money to be able to attend the temple. A couple families will be sealed and people preparing to serve missions. The people here are amazing; our neighbor is some really old women. She brought us over some strange thing when she found out we were deathly ill and our moms were not here.
This week has been one for the books; I have never felt so weak yet so happy to be here. I am sooo thankful my companion and I are like sisters it made the entire experience not so dreadful. I know with all my heart this is the best thing I could be doing right now, helping, serving and loving the people of Ecuador.
I love and miss you all so much.  I hope you have a great week.
Para siempre dios este con vos

BUENOS TARDES people that I love... Conocoto

BUENOS TARDES people that I love...
Well it has been quite the week in Conocoto. The people here are amazing. It is truly a blessing to be in Ecuador. I have never felt so loved from my father in heaven so much.
It has been a HARD week. Opening an area and being trained is HARD. We don’t know many of the members. Everyone and there Uncle Carlos hits on us. But, it just takes some good hard work to pull us through. We never stop, I love it. We contact and contact all day. We are teaching a couple of families that are kind of sort of progressing. The families here are the best, they do everything together, the family is the most important unit.
My fear of dogs has grown even more here, there are dogs EVERYWHERE!!!!!! Scary dogs it’s horrible. I am so thankful for my companion she is the best! We get along so well, I think I might have a 6 pack from laughing so hard at night. It is such a blessing to have someone that I love and have pretty much everything in common with.
So let’s talk food, everyone feeds you all the time. I eat a solid pound of rice every day. Except on Sunday she made the most amazing spaghetti, it must have been the best thing since sliced bread this week haha!
Well that’s that, I swear it’s a miracle I am alive here, people go crazy over my blonde hair. Today we played soccer all day and eat a huge pizza, I think I will qualify for the world cup after training with these Latino Elders.  I love it, I love this so much, the joy and peace I feel here is hard to describe. I know how much I am being watched over.
Thank you for all your emails and prayers
LOVE YOU ALL

Hermana Merrill:)

Here are some pictures...my comp and I on the roof of our house, the huge Catholic Church in the middle of this small town, playing soccer this morning... and a pic at my momitas with the elders and her daughter and grand daughter

Mission Presidents Email to parents

Dear Brother and Sister Merrill,

We are so pleased that Sister Merrill is serving in the Ecuador Quito Mission.  We welcome her with all our hearts and know that the gifts she has been given from our Father in Heaven  and the talents she has developed will bless the lives of those with and for whom she serves in a unique way only she can offer.   She has impressed us as an outstanding young woman.  Her dedicated service will further increase her abilities and character in remarkable ways.

There are currently 247 missionaries in our mission, serving in 13 zones.    Sister Merrill has been assigned to serve in Quito in the Los Chillos Norte Zone with Sister Castillo from North Salt Lake City, Utah as her companion and trainer.  Sister Castillo is known by the other missionaries for her obedience,  experience, leadership, and happy disposition.

Attached are photos that show Sister Merrill with her companion; the group of missionaries with whom she arrived; and with us.

We know and understand that there is sacrifice on your part both emotionally and financially to support her during this period of full time missionary service and we express our gratitude for your offering which furthers the work of inviting others to come unto Christ and to receive the blessings of the Gospel in their lives.

With our love and gratitude,

President and Sister Christensen

Buenos tardes

Buenos tardes hommies

Well I have made it here to the best place on earth. I am so grateful,
words can not describe. This chruch and the people in it are amazing.
So I will start at the beginning. I got here Tuesday afternoon my mission
president picked up me and the 29 other elders. We drove back to the nurses
house where I met my companion!!!!!!!!! All the elders did not get there
trainers untill thursday but she came early to stay with me because I am
the only girl...SOO we stayed with the mission nurses in like a 5 star
appartment right in the city of quito, for 2 night while I had trainning.
We got to know each other. I LOVE HERMANA CASTILLO we are exactly the same
its crazy! She is from north salt lake and is 22. She knows spanish super
well her dad was a mission president in Mexico City when she was in high
school. So once those couple days were over we headed to CONOCOTO!! We are
opening a new area with the Zone Leaders.Conocoto is just about an hour
south east of Quito. It is a smaller town not the city and tons of Native
Ecuadorian People otovaleños is the tribe. No sisters have been here in 14
years the people are thrilllllled to have us. We live on the main street
and the bus is infront of our house its sweet! I have been surviving the
food no issues!! We have "momitas" who is someone in the ward that feeds us
every afternoon for the big meal of the day. Our food is usually some crazy
soup you never ask what is in it. A mound of rice and some meat. My momita
hates fish so I lucked out!!! We have gone crazy our brand new appartment
has no curtains cause we are the 1st to live there so its like a fish bowl
so we hung some sheets its super getto. Also EVERY man I pass on the street
whistles at me yesterday someone even meowed haha... My self esteem is
doing great haha haha Well ecuador is everything I ever imagined it to be,
kinda like camping, such nice people, and strange food. Everyone is so
humble and loving to say the least. My spanish is horrible I can understand
alot but not speak as well but ohh well it will happen with time and
studying. We buy food off the street for cheap and eat super healthy, and
walk a good million miles every day.
As for missionary work, we have already taught a couple lessons and found
some people for baptism. Church on Sunday was awesome, the person saying
the prayer said he was thankful god sent the most beautiful people to
ecuador haha! Gosh I love it here, its pure joy AHH!!! Today we went into
the city to the mega maxi which is like a walmart and the mall, it felt
like I was in america! And we got cheeseburgers with the elders AHHHH it
was amazing haha
Heres some pics...
my 1st ecuadorian meal ...Where I live...My companion.
next week I am sure will have many more stories, thanks for all the emails
and prayers you all are the best, I love you each!

Week 5 - Letter from the CCM - Buenos Dias from Mexico

Buenos Dias!!!!

IT IS MY LAST PDAY IN THE CCM!!! It has been a much better week less toilet time! I have been getting ready to leave on Monday!

I cannot believe it is here, I am so ready to get to Ecuador and start teaching the people. This week has flown by. We have been having huge storms at night and wonderful sunny days. 6 weeks has come and gone.  I can teach some lessons in Spanish and testify, I guess that’s all I need to do in this work.

SUBJUNCTIVES ARE KILLING ME. Grammar is hard. Also this week has been one of tests. Test of patience test of faith. Being here is a huge leap of faith, not many girls are going foreign most are going back to the states…I would say 75% of them. It makes me so nervous to leave.

I will keep this email short I have tons of packing to do and preparing to leave on Monday!!!!

The church is true, be good, strengthen your testimonies, NOW IS THE TIME. Be kind, be happy and work hard it’s all you need.

I LOVE YOU ALL
Para siempre dios esté con Vos
con amor,

HERMANA MERRILL:)

ps we have run out of things to send pics of so these are funny haha
